Two Ojibway sisters set off across the frozen north country to see the SkySpirits' midnight dance. It isn't easy for the younger sister to be silent, but gradually she begins to treasure the stillness and the wonderful experiences it brings. After an exhilarating walk and patient waiting, the girls are rewarded by the arrival of the SkySpirits --- the northern lights --- dancing and shimmering in the night sky.

This powerful story, with its stunning illustrations, captures the chill of a northern night, the warmth of the family circle and the radiance of a child's wonder.

  • One of the most lovely books we have read in years. I bought it to help my granddaughter with her science and art project she is 8 and selected the northern lights. She read this book as part of it and then talked about how they actually happen. Her teacher kept the book to read fully to the class. She was so proud of her project.
  • Beautiful story about the earth’s breathtaking and wondrous northern lights display and the special bond between sisters that is created through a shared family history, culture and heritage as well as the unique relationship dynamic of siblings.
  • Lovely art work, nice story & the northern lights. Northern hemisphere winter rules!
  • Beautiful Book
  • Lovely story about two sisters awaiting the wonders of the northern skies. I bought it for two great granddaughters who can share their adventures as their lives unfold for them.
  • Love the illustrations and the story. Great at integrating the language
  • I ordered this book to go along with my third grade unit on Native Americans. I used this book as a mentor text to help show the Native American beliefs of spirits in regard to nature. My students were enthralled by the book the entire time, making meaningful connections to our previous lessons as I read. The pictures are absolutely beautiful, too.
  • Great read.
