A Concise Review of Clinical Laboratory Science 9780781782029 Medicine Health Science Books Reviews

  • I used the first edition of this book years ago to study for my MLT exam. That edition was a wonderful tool to prepare for the registry exam. With the first edition having such a good reputation in my mind, I decided I would purchase the second edition to help prepare for the MLS exam. I was SHOCKED at how many errors are in the new edition. First off, there are typos on almost every page. These kinds of errors I could have probably lived with, but the blatant false information, I could not. The first of these I found was just a few pages into the book, where it began to discuss the electromagnetic spectrum. It stated that, "Gamma rays and x-rays have very long wavelengths..." followed by, "Violet light has the longest wavelength of the visible spectrum..." This is completely WRONG! Needless to say, errors like this one removed all my confidence in using this book as a study guide.
  • So I bought this book to help studying to take my ASCP exam to become a certified lab tach. I used only this book and labce.com to study for it, and I passed with a really high score. Needless to say, this book is very useful! It organizes everything you need in a great manner, and cuts out the junk that the school books cram in there. Easy to read, and the chapters are short enough to read in the thirty minutes or so before going to bed. Highly recommend it!
  • I've had this book for several years now. Used it to pass the ASCP MLT exam and currently using it to study for the AAB MT Exam. The Chapters are written well with a study review at the end of each, and then a final overview test at the end. Very easy to read and understand, not as overwhelming as some of my other books. My copy is paperback but it has some sort of plastic cover on top that keeps it from coming apart with lots of use. This book sometimes is on backorder as I've had several co-workers order it after seeing mine, but it's worth the wait. A+++

Update I have the new version of the book also which is bigger and does not have the reinforced cover. I have to say I perfer the older book size better. They did give me a code for the website which has great study questions and they have helped me study when I have free time since I am in school again to get my MLS degree. Still a great book and I highly recommend it.
  • A excellent reference and answer and question book. MUST have to refresh your technical and scientific knowledge.
  • Great purchase
  • 100%
  • i bought this book on the premise that the book was for students and working techs alike. keep it around the lab...
The written information is clear and to the point.
On the other hand, the image bank is lacking, especially in parasitology just a couple drawing(not very good ones at that)not diagrams just 5year old drawings. Other pics that hit me as vague(at best) was the 1 of basophilic stippling of RBCs. if i was on a bench looking at it, i would never be able to pick it up with this book's online picture. i.e. i have seen Baso stippling.

the good is that book is great for basic basics, but if u want anything specific on the individual disciplining(micro.b, haemo, parasite, histo.cyto) look for books focusing on the individual grouping
  • I found this review helpful in reviewing for my ASCP MLS exam. I would not use it as my only review material, but I found it helpful in combination with the Success review to kind of reinforce the important stuff. I would also suggest taking the computer adaptive style review tests on labCE (my friends and I bought a subscription to share).
